Gemini CLI
Google's open-source terminal agent. With Gemini 3.1 Pro it scores Terminal-Bench 2.1 70.7%.
Gemini CLI is Google's open-source (Apache 2.0) AI coding agent that runs Gemini models directly in your terminal, using a ReAct (reason-and-act) loop with built-in tools and MCP servers to read/write files, run shell commands, and complete multi-step coding tasks. It is notable for a very large free tier, a 1M-token context window, and being one of the few fully open-sourced flagship coding agents. CRITICAL CURRENT NOTE (as of June 2026): on June 18, 2026 Google began transitioning it to the new closed-source "Antigravity CLI" — the free "Code Assist for individuals," Google AI Pro, and Ultra tiers stop being served on that date, while paid Standard/Enterprise and API-key access remain.

- Runs on Google's Gemini family. Latest in the CLI: Gemini 3 Pro, Gemini 3 Flash, and Gemini 3.1 Pro (preview), with intelligent auto-routing (reserves Gemini 3 Pro for complex reasoning) plus a manual model selector. Earlier versions ran Gemini 2.5 Pro/Flash.

Pricing
Generous free tier via personal Google account (Gemini Code Assist for individuals): ~60 requests/min and 1,000 requests/day, including Gemini Pro + Flash and the 1M-token context. Free Gemini API-key route is more limited (~10 req/min, 250/day, Flash-only). Paid: Gemini Code Assist Standard ~$19-22.80/user/mo and Enterprise ~$45/user/mo (annual; add higher quotas, SLA, admin controls, code customization). Pay-as-you-go via Gemini API/Vertex AI bills per token (e.g. Gemini 3 Flash ~$0.30/M in, $2.50/M out; Gemini 3 Pro ~$1.25/M in, $10/M out). IMPORTANT: as of June 18, 2026 the free individual / AI Pro / Ultra tiers are discontinued and migrated to Antigravity CLI; paid Standard/Enterprise and paid API keys are unaffected.
Benchmarks
- SWE-bench Verified (Gemini 3 Flash, agentic coding in CLI)78%
- SWE-bench Verified (Gemini 3 Pro)76.2%
- SWE-bench Verified (Gemini 3.1 Pro)80.6%

Key capabilities
- ▸1M-token context window (~1,500 pages) that loads the whole project directory
- ▸Built-in tools: file read/write/edit, shell execution, Google Search grounding, web fetch
- ▸Full MCP (Model Context Protocol) support for connecting external tools, databases, and custom APIs
- ▸ReAct agentic loop with per-change approval, Plan mode (read-only planning), and sandboxing
- ▸Subagents (including remote subagents), checkpointing, session rewind/replay, and hooks
- ▸Headless/scripting mode with JSON and stream-json output for CI and automation
Strengths
- +Largest free tier among flagship coding agents (~1,000 requests/day) with no API key needed
- +Massive 1M-token context window, excellent for reading and reasoning across large repos
- +Fully open source (Apache 2.0) — inspectable, forkable, with a large external contributor community
- +Top-tier SWE-bench Verified scores via Gemini 3 / 3.1 models
Limitations
- −Terminal/shell agentic performance (Terminal-Bench) consistently lags competitors like GPT-Codex
- −Free individual / AI Pro / Ultra tiers are being discontinued June 18, 2026 and forced toward the closed-source Antigravity CLI (which lacks full feature parity at launch)
- −Reported quota friction and a shift from generous daily limits toward tighter weekly/compute caps in the successor
Best for
Developers who want a free, open-source, large-context terminal coding agent for exploration, large-repo reading, and multi-step tasks — though individual users should now weigh the June 2026 migration to Antigravity CLI.
What's new
On May 19, 2026 (Google I/O) Google announced it is transitioning Gemini CLI to the new multi-agent "Antigravity CLI" (Go-based, closed-source, invoked via `agy`). As of June 18, 2026, Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions stopped serving the free Code Assist for individuals, Google AI Pro, and Ultra tiers; paid Standard/Enterprise and API-key access remain. Latest CLI release was v0.47.0 (June 18, 2026); Gemini 3 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro were added to the CLI earlier in 2026.
