Claude 3 is a family of large language and multimodal models developed by Anthropic and released on March 4, 2024. The lineup comprises three tiers—Claude 3 Opus, Claude 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Haiku—with graduated performance and cost profiles. At launch, Opus scored 86.8% on the 5-shot MMLU benchmark and 84.9% on 0-shot HumanEval, while supporting a 200,000-token context window and processing of JPEG, PNG, GIF, and PDF inputs, with text-only outputs. Sonnet delivered 2x faster inference than Opus and Haiku achieved sub-second latency on simple queries, with Anthropic reporting Haiku costs of $0.25 per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens. All three models were available via API and claude.ai. This family succeeded the Claude 2 series and established Anthropic’s first unified multimodal architecture, later iterated upon with Claude 3.5 and Claude 4.
