GitHub is a Microsoft-owned software development platform and version-control host built on Git, launched in 2008 and acquired by Microsoft in October 2018. GitHub matters now because it functions as the primary distribution channel for Microsoft’s AI developer tools, deeply integrating Copilot into Visual Studio Code and Azure DevOps, and shaping AI-assisted software engineering for a majority of the world’s professional developers. Its centrality is reinforced by its role as the primary host for the npm registry and its deep integration with package ecosystems like PyPI and RubyGems.
