Careers — How to Become an Expert
Roles, salaries, certifications, and concrete paths into the AI data center industry. Whether you want to design facilities, run them, code the orchestration, or sell into them — here's how to get there.
1 · The roles
Data center careers split into roughly four families:
Critical facilities (mechanical / electrical / civil)
- Data Center Technician ($55-90k US, €35-55k FR) — hands-on rack & stack, cabling, basic troubleshooting.
- Critical Facilities Technician ($75-120k US, €45-70k FR) — power and cooling specialist on shift.
- Data Center Engineer ($95-160k US, €60-95k FR) — owns specific systems (UPS, chillers, networks).
- Critical Facilities Manager ($140-220k US, €85-130k FR) — runs the building.
- Director / VP of Data Centers ($200-400k+ US) — multi-site portfolio.
Networks & IT operations
- Network Engineer ($95-180k) — fabric design, BGP, InfiniBand, optical.
- Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) ($130-280k) — automation, observability, incident response.
- Cluster Engineer ($140-300k+) — owns a training cluster end-to-end (NVIDIA, Anthropic, OpenAI titles).
Design, construction & project management
- MEP Engineer ($90-180k) — mechanical, electrical, plumbing design.
- Construction Manager ($120-200k) — runs the GC relationship.
- Project Director ($180-350k+) — owns a $500M+ build.
Strategy, sales, and analyst
- Account Executive (vendor side) — $200-500k OTE selling DLC, switches, GPUs.
- Industry analyst — JLL, CBRE, Synergy, SemiAnalysis. $130-250k.
2 · Certifications that actually matter
For facilities-side roles, certs are weighted heavily. For IT/SRE roles, less so — experience > certs.

3 · Concrete entry paths
Path A — entry from a tech background (zero DC experience)
- Read all 12 of these lessons. Take the Schneider Electric Data Center University (free).
- Pass EPI CDCP ($1.4k, 2 days). Many employers reimburse.
- Apply for Data Center Technician roles at a colo (Equinix, Digital Realty) or hyperscaler (AWS, Microsoft).
- After 1-2 years, target Critical Facilities Technician or Network Operations Center roles.
- For senior tracks: pursue Uptime Institute ATO + a discipline cert (PMP, Certified Energy Manager, RCDD).
Path B — entry from EE/ME engineering school
- Target MEP consulting firms (JBA, Bala, Syska Hennessy, Stantec) for "Data Center Designer" associate roles.
- Or hyperscaler infrastructure teams (Microsoft Cloud Operations + Innovation, AWS Infra, Google Data Center Engineering).
- Earn Uptime ATD within 2-3 years. This is the credential for designing tier-rated facilities.
- By year 5-7: senior MEP engineer or hyperscaler senior infra engineer ($150-220k).
Path C — entry from software/SRE
- Learn Linux + networking deeply. Get comfortable with SLURM and/or Kubernetes.
- Read NVIDIA's reference architecture documents (free); take NVIDIA DLI courses.
- Target "AI Cluster Engineer", "ML Infrastructure Engineer", "Training Infrastructure" roles at hyperscalers, AI labs (Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral), or neoclouds (CoreWeave, Lambda).
- This path commands the highest salaries — $200-400k+ at top labs.
4 · For readers in France 🇫🇷
The French data center industry is concentrated in three regions: Paris (Île-de-France, especially Seine-Saint-Denis, Marne-la-Vallée), Lyon, and Marseille (subsea cable hub).
Major employers in France
Equinix (12+ sites), Data4, Digital Realty (Interxion), OVHcloud (Roubaix HQ), Scaleway, Iliad/Free, Orange Business, Atos. Hyperscalers also have large French presences (AWS Paris, Microsoft Azure West Europe is in NL but with French ops).
French-specific training
- CESI École d'ingénieurs — Mastère Spécialisé "Manager des datacenters et des infrastructures numériques" (Bac+6).
- EPITA — datacenter modules within their MS Cybersecurity / Cloud tracks.
- AFNOR Compétences — short data center management courses.
- Datacenter Dynamics France — workshops + the annual DCD>Connect Paris conference.
- Schneider Electric Energy University — free, French-language available.
- UPSA Technologies — practical courses on UPS & cooling, in Lyon.
5 · For readers in the US 🇺🇸
Major US data center hubs: Northern Virginia (Loudoun + Prince William counties — the largest market in the world), Dallas, Phoenix, Columbus, Atlanta, Chicago, Silicon Valley, Quincy WA, and emerging Memphis, Abilene, and the Texas Stargate corridor.
US-specific training pathways
- Marist College (NY) — Data Center Operations & Management certificate.
- Northern Virginia Community College — Data Center Operations career studies certificate, designed for the NoVA market.
- Southern Methodist University — Data Center Systems Engineering executive program.
- OSPI (Open Standards Project Institute) — Open Compute training tracks.
- Penn Foster College — accredited data center technician programs (online).
- 7x24 Exchange — industry conferences + online courses; the leading US DC professional org.
- Veterans — Salute Inc. and Vets2PM place military veterans into DC operations roles; many hyperscalers prefer veteran candidates for facilities.
6 · Free online resources to follow
