Short-Term Interest Modeling: This component focuses on the temporal changes in the importance of aspect terms a user has interacted with recently. It captures fleeting shifts in preference, answering the question: "What has this user cared about in their latest engagements?"
Long-Term Interest Modeling: This component considers the user's global behavioral patterns, including aspects they have not interacted with recently but that form part of their enduring profile. It answers: "What are this user's foundational, stable preferences?"
The core innovation is how LSA combines these signals. The model uses a Transformer architecture—a foundation of modern AI known for its effectiveness in sequence modeling and attention mechanisms—to evaluate the importance of every aspect within the combined set of aspects related to the user and the target item. It dynamically assigns a weight to each aspect for the specific user-item pair by fusing the long- and short-term interest signals.
Finally, these weighted aspect representations are used to predict the user's rating or interaction probability with the item. The authors validated LSA on four real-world datasets, demonstrating that it improves the Mean Squared Error (MSE)—a common metric for rating prediction accuracy—by an average of 2.55% over the best existing baseline method.
